The Importance of Aboriginal Education
Amy, in 2012 there is a gap between the educational outcomes and achievements of Indigenous and Non-Indigenous students. It is the goal of the NSW DEC Aboriginal Education and Training Policy that ‘Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students will match or better the outcomes of the broader student population’ (NSW DET 2009. p6). To do this it is essential that schools have quality teachers, quality leadership and strong school-community relationships. Teachers and schools must have high expectations of Aboriginal students and make no excuses for a lack of success (NSW AECG & NSW DET 2009).
As a teacher Amy, you need to ensure that you are working collaboratively with the families of Aboriginal students in your class to ensure they are supported to achieve their full potential. ‘Aboriginal Education is everybody’s business’ (NSW DET 2009. p13) and it is essential that you are aware of progress and policies to provide Aboriginal students with the best possible education.
Below are a number of policies and documents which you should be aware of and that will help you to effectively teach Aboriginal Education.
