Personalised Learning Plans (PLP)
Amy! Every Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander child in your class needs a PLP! PLP's were developed and implemented in response to the Review of Aboriginal Education (NSW DET & NSW AECG 2004) to improve Indigenous student learning outcomes through positive relationships with parents and families.
What is a PLP? A PLP outlines what a student needs to do to meet their goals and educational outcomes. A teacher needs to collaborate with the student and their family to identify what aims and goals they have as well as any barriers that may need to be overcome to reach these goals.
Why implement PLP’s? It is Department policy that all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students have a PLP. Alongside this PLP’s are a great way to involve parents and families in their child’s learning. Developing positive relationships with students and their families will ensure you are on track to supporting the student to reach their full potential.
What should a PLP include?
A PLP should provide the students, family and teacher with a clear understanding of where the student wants and needs to go next and how the student can be supported to get there. To gain this understanding, a PLP should answer 4 key questions:
· Where is the student now?
· Where should the student be?
· How will they get to where they should be?
· How will we know when they get there?
(Commonwealth of Australia 2012).
AMY!
Make sure you work with the AEO and AERT at your school to develop and implement PLP's. They will help you to connect with students families and ensure you have the right strategies to develop an effective PLP. Remember to always utilise the resources you have at school. The links below will support your development of PLP's.
