Assessment
_
Amy, you found you had no work samples for one student? Ok lets get organised! We need daily assessment and record sheets, we need to be constantly roaming the room and observing students and we need to reflect and evaluate our lessons every single day!
I must advise that you take regular anecdotal notes while you are initially grasping the influx of decisions and new students you are dealing with. Do not over estimate yourself and think 'you can just remember it all'. You need some evidence when dealing with those parents.
Now we have found some things to get you started:

Now we have found some things to get you started:
Modes of Assessment:
There are three main forms of assessment and you will need to use all three at some stage this year. We have broken the three modes of assessment down for you so it does not seem quite so daunting.
- Assessment for learning: Occurs when teachers use inferences about students’ progress to inform their teaching (Formative and can be both formal and informal)
- Assessment as learning: Is similar to assessment for learning, as they both have the same objective to collect data about individual students to inform future learning (Mantei, 2011) (Formative & informal)
- Assessment of learning: Occurs when teachers use evidence of students learning to make judgements on student’s achievement against goals and standards (Summative and mostly formal)
Practical examples of assessment:
There are lots of different types of assessment you can use in the classroom and most of the time you can design the assessment yourself. We have made you a short list of assessment tasks that are commonly used in the primary classroom:
Below are a few examples of marking rubrics and assessment record tables that you could use in your classroom Amy!

And of course we need to always be assessing in accordance with the DEC requirements, so here are the Principles for Assessment and Reporting in NSW Public Schools which all your assessments should be based on!

One more thing...
The ARC website is well worth a visit too Amy, ARC stands for Assessment Resource Centre and is designed by the NSW Board of Studies. There are examples of marked assessments on this website helping to guide you in your marking of your assessments as well as give you ideas for assessment tasks.
