IMPORTANT, next Friday your class will be required to perform the assembly item! Amy you will need to be prepared and organised for this.
At this weeks assembly it is essential you take notes of when the student item takes in the assembly schedule, how the students enter and exit the performing area and how long the item runs for, this will give you an average to stick to. The average assembly item will only run for approximately 5 minutes.
Talk to your class
It is important you build good relationships with your students and make them included in the preparation process. Ensure their input feels valued by you and others in the class, this aspect is highlighted in the Quality Learning Environment Element, embedded within the NSW Quality Teaching Framework (2003). The goal of creating an assembly item together as a class will motivate students and improve their performance (Carole 1992). They will also be full of knowledge about past assembly items, so see what you can find out through a few simple questions.

Assembly Ideas
Amy, if you are still stuck for ideas, have a look at the list collated below, maybe one of them will come in useful.
1. Performance
Below is a story called 'Rainbow People', read this story in class and talk about the aspects of 'Inclusion'.
Your class can use this story to create a play to perform at assembly. The play should revolve around the theme of 'inclusion'.

2. Readers Theatre
Reader theater involves a presentation of written work in script form. Students are relying on their voices rather than their acting skills. Readers Theatre will assist your students to develop both verbal and non-verbal communication skills as well as active listening skills (Advance Teacher Training 2007). Your students will have to work both individually and collaboratively, making choices about how to structure ideas and the performance. It will encourage students to use their imaginations and additionally address several of their multiple intelligence.
Below are a few practice scripts you may wish to run through with your class.

Once they get the idea, some recommendations of text to use include:
- 'Where the SideWalk Ends' by Shel Silverstien
- 'Hattie and the Fox' by Mem Fox
- 'The Tortoise and the Hare' by Janet Stevens
3. Integrate a Topic
Amy, try and integrate a topic you have been covering in class. Use this topic as a base. Students from your class can introduce the topic to the entire school and provide them with a summary of important facts they have learnt so far.
Students present work samples produced from this topic, you may even be able to organise a small parade through the classes.
The class can finalise the performance with a song about the topic or even a poem.

*Remember to keep it simple and allow students to take ownership over their work. This will make it more valuable for them and assist in developing those collaborative learning skills.
